AAAZ Congratulates the newly appointed ACC Board members and shares its expectations for their tenure

The Alliance for Accountability Advocates Zambia (AAAZ) extends its congratulations to the newly appointed members of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Board, as announced by His Excellency, President Hakainde Hichilema in a press statement on 17th January 2025. We welcome these appointments, which are subject to ratification by the National Assembly. The inclusion of civil society women in the board is a positive step forward and demonstrates the government’s commitment to inclusive representation and diverse leadership.
As we celebrate this development, we call on the new board to bring a transformative approach to the fight against corruption. The ACC has faced criticism for not effectively addressing corruption in the past, and it is now imperative that the new appointees take bold and decisive steps to restore public trust and credibility in the institution. We expect the new board to act impartially, be transparent in their operations, and prioritize integrity and accountability in all their actions.
We acknowledge that the challenges in fighting corruption are complex, but this is a crucial moment for the ACC to demonstrate its commitment to real change. The board must ensure that corruption is not only tackled at a personal level or political lines, but that systemic issues are also addressed. Our citizens are looking for a commission that will stand firm in upholding justice and fairness, without bias or interference.
In addition to the appointment of the new board, it is important to highlight the ongoing issue of corruption in resource management. The recent 2023 Auditor General’s Report raised serious concerns over the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), revealing significant irregularities, particularly within Lusaka City Council. K5.3 million was disbursed to 373 beneficiaries whose identities remain unverified, and no traceable businesses could be linked to these recipients. Furthermore, K336,000 in soft loans were issued to individuals who were not approved as beneficiaries.
These findings are deeply disquieting and emphasize the urgent need for the ACC to not only investigate these cases but also ensure that public resources are managed responsibly and transparently. It is imperative that the new ACC board steps up to hold those accountable and prevent such mismanagement from recurring.
As the new board takes office, we implore them to act decisively and restore confidence in the fight against corruption. The citizens of Zambia deserve a commission that will work tirelessly to ensure that public resources are used for the benefit of the people, and not for personal gain.
Once again, we congratulate the new appointees and look forward to seeing meaningful change under their leadership. Together, we can build a stronger, more accountable and transparent Zambia.
